Tuesday 3:30-4:30
Fees: $130 per session.  $30 lab fees paid directly to instructor.

This course is recommended for upper elementary age children (3rd, 4th, and 5th ), but open to all children between the ages of 6-12. Using the tv show Mythbusters as our starting point, we will follow in their footsteps as we confirm or bust some popular beliefs that may or may not be true. The goals for this course are a basic understanding of the following concepts:
  • The Scientific Method
  • Hypotheses, theories, and laws
  • Record keeping and honesty in science
  • Lab safety and basic rules
  • Differences between experiments, observations, and demonstrations
  • How to evaluate an experiment
  • How to have fun with science!!!!!
Your student will need:

A composition notebook – For students who are able to write independently, we will use this notebook for simple record keeping as well as stating our lab purpose, procedures, and conclusions. An assistant will help those who are not yet writing independently.

Mythbuster's Science Fair Book. - We will be using this book as we work our way through some popular science concepts, determining which beliefs are fact and which are fiction. While it is not required that you buy this book, it will be helpful for your student to read the labs before class. There are also many other labs published in this book that we will not be able to complete within the constraints of our classroom due to equipment or time restrictions. This book is a fun way to bring science into your everyday schedule and spend some quality time with the kids.

Lab 1 – Introduction to Science
Topic: What is Science? What is the Scientific method, and how is it used? What's a hypothesis? How do we test it? What's the difference between an experiment, and an observation? Why is creating a baking soda volcano an example of a demonstration rather than an experiment? What are the rules for the lab, and how can we stay safe? Who are some of the world's great scientists? During this introductory lab we will discover the answers to these questions and more!

Lab 2 – Combo lab – Soda Geysers -
Topic: We will explore the science behind soda fountains during this explosive lab.
Book pages 7-12

Lab 3 – Combo lab- Cola Cleansers
Topic: This week we will explore the science behind household cleaners,
and maybe come up with a few new ones of our own.
Book pages 13-16

Lab 4 – Combo lab – Soda Chrome
Topic: This week we will explore the process of rust and tarnish,
and test different rust removal products.
Book pages 19-23

Lab 5 – Combo lab – Soda Corrosion & Explosion
Topic: This week will explore the possible effects soda can have on parts of your body.
Book pages 24-25 & Book pages 28-29

Lab 6 – Keepin' Cool
This week we will explore methods of keeping your beverages cold. We will test some of the many ideas people have had over the years, and maybe come up with a few of our own.
Book pages 42- 43

Lab 7 – Social Studies
Topic: This week we need volunteers to fill out questionnaires for your children to analyze. It would be helpful if we could get two volunteers per child.
(If you are going to volunteer for this lab... DO NOT read this section with your child! If your child is reading independently, have them read it on their own. If not, ask a friend or relative to help. It is important that only your children have full disclosure on this lab until after it is over.)
Book pages 112-114

Lab 8 – Butter me up
Topic: This week we will be testing gravity but with a fun little twist.
Book pages 115-116

There will be a follow up class, Science for the Fair, for interested students during the fourth session. During this follow up course, upper elementary/lower middle grade students will learn the process of designing their own science fair project. From concept to completion, the students will work under the guidance of their instructor.
