YALSA Teen Top Ten Book Club
Every Sunday through the summer, 1 Sunday a month during school year, 3pm
Web Bridge Firehouse, Alpharetta

The YALSA Teen Top Ten book club is a great opportunity for volunteer hours and a recognizable entry on college apps.  Teens 12-18 are welcome.  We read and critique galleys (pre-printing copies of new books) of young adult titles from all the major publishing houses.  We send the critiques to the pubs and  titles we give top scores are sent to YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association a division of The American Library Association which does the Newbery, Caldecott, Printz.. National Book Award, etc.).  We are one of 15 such groups across the country and we screen these galleys to present 25 titles for consideration by all teens in the country to vote on in late August.   This produces the Teen Top Ten Award announced the beginning of October.  Although we had to compete in a writing competition, we welcome new members.   There are about 40 kids...many of whom are home schooled.  We have done reading projects with the Margaret Mitchell house and the National Endowment for the Arts.  We are creating a web page with videos the kids have made of author interviews.  We attend plays presented by The Atlanta Shakespeare Company at Shakespeare's Tavern.  There are no fees and we meet every Sunday at 3:00 during June/July/August at the Webb Bridge firehouse in Alpharetta.  During the school year we meet one Sunday a month--same time, same place.  Contact:  Cindy Rittenhouse at rittenhousec@mindspring.com if you would like to participate.

3 p.m. every Sunday through the summer, 1 Sunday a month during the school year. Check LEO calendar on BigTent for dates.

LEO has a Girl’s Club… yep, it’s just for girls!
We will meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, 12 – 1 pm, in the

Our first meeting will be August 27th.
Bring a sack lunch and we will plan what we want to do for the year.

Odyssey of the Mind -
Mondays 1:00-2:30

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Kids apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

LEO currently has one team of six 5-7 year old boys and girls that entered the regional tournament in the special Primary Division this past spring. After a wonderful experience, they are planning to compete in Division I for 2009-2010.  That team is currently full.  The rules allow for more than one home school team to share and split the cost of national membership. Our group will be registering a second Odyssey of the Mind team and we are looking for 9-12 year old boys and girls to join.  Please let me know if you are interested in joining this great program. You can email Di Linh Reichman directly at dhlr1234(at)yahoo.com.

Update: Second team is now full, but we will take names for a waiting list.

Elementary Book Club
A time for 1st through 5th grade bookworms (and reluctant readers/future bookworms) to talk about some great books with other kids.  We’ll meet once a month and discuss a new novel each time.  We’ll choose books that are appropriate and accessible for younger readers but sophisticated enough to hold the interest of older readers.  Selections will be at about a 3rd through 5th grade reading level; kids can read them independently or be read to by a parent.  The first half of the meeting will be devoted to guided discussion (with some gentle, age-appropriate introduction to literary terms and critical analysis); during the second half we’ll do a craft, game, or activity related to that month’s book.  Join us for our next meeting Monday, October 24 at 12:30.  We will read Because of Winn Dixie this month.  Materials fee of $5 per child
