YALSA Teen Top Ten Book Critique Group

Every Sunday through the summer, 2nd Sunday a month during school year, 2pm Spruill Oaks Public Library.

The YALSA Teen Top Ten book critique group is a great opportunity for volunteer hours and a recognizable entry on college applications. Teens 12-18 are welcome. We read and critique galleys-- (pre-published copies of new books)-- of young adult titles from all the major publishing houses, then send the critiques to the publishers and YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association a division of The American Library Association which does the Newbery, Caldecott, Printz., National Book Award, etc.). We are one of 15 such groups across the country; we screen these galleys to present 25 titles for consideration by all teens in the country to vote on in late August which produces the Teen Top Ten Award announced the beginning of October. We earned this group through a writing competition and continually welcome new members to our current 50 membership from over 25 public school, private academy, and home schools from all over the Atlanta area. We have done reading projects with the Margaret Mitchell house and the National Endowment for the Arts. We are creating a web page with videos the kids have made of author interviews. We attend plays presented by The Atlanta Shakespeare Company at Shakespeare's Tavern. There is an annual fee of $5 and we meet every Sunday at 2:00 during June/July/August at the Spruill Oaks Public Library in Johns Creek. During the school year we meet the second Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. at Spruill Oaks Library. Contact: Cindy Rittenhouse at rittenhousec@mindspring.com if you would like to participate.

2 p.m. every Sunday through the summer, 2nd Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. during the school year. Check LEO calendar on BigTent for dates.

Elementary Book Club

A time for 1st through 5th grade bookworms (and reluctant readers/future bookworms) to talk about some great books with other kids.  We’ll meet once a month and discuss a new novel each time.  We’ll choose books that are appropriate and accessible for younger readers but sophisticated enough to hold the interest of older readers.  Selections will be at about a 3rd through 5th grade reading level; kids can read them independently or be read to by a parent.  The first half of the meeting will be devoted to guided discussion (with some gentle, age-appropriate introduction to literary terms and critical analysis); during the second half we’ll do a craft, game, or activity related to that month’s book.   Materials fees will apply.

Meetings will be 2:30-3:00 on Thursdays, once per month.

Atlanta Math Circle Math Club (6th-8th grades)

Come join us as we continue to grow in our problem solving ability and have a good time doing it! Club mathematics is about so much more than competition. It's about applying the math you've learned as well as learning the "tricks of the trade" so that you'll be ready to have a ball "showing your stuff and "spreading your wings" whether in math competitions or any other endeavors requiring good analytical skills.

This year we again plan to participate in the National Math Olympiads as well as send some of our students to the Mathcounts Chapter competition at UGA in February. Last year we worked as a club to earn Mathcounts Silver Status, and had two of our students receive Olympiad trophies for their performance as well as one who placed 22nd nationally in the American Math Challenge.

This year's club will focus on 6th-8th grade level students, though younger advanced students are welcome.

Meeting Time: Alternate Thursdays @ 3:30 starting on Sept. 8th.
Fees: $50 for LEO members/Non-LEO members pay $50 plus an additional facilities fee of $5 per meeting.
